Athena Wireless Node (Lutron)
About the Athena Wireless Node
The Athena Wireless Node is a compact electronic device roughly the size of a film cannister. It installs into existing light fixtures, and allows the fixtures to be controlled wirelessly from Lutron's existing Athena control system. The Wireless Node also has (coming soon) a version with daylight sensing and motion detection, all in one small, convenient package.
This product came with a handful of unique design challenges. One challenge was how to mount the unit to existing lighting fixtures. We eventually settled on a set of fairly traditional "snap arms" which can be seen in other panel-mounting electronic products. This allowed the unit to be installed from one side of the fixture, without access to the internals, which was a big benefit for our customers.
One further challenge was that the snap arms needed to be able to accommodate a wide variety of hole diameters and panel thicknesses. This required extensive real-world measurements, as well as Ansys analysis and plastic material consultations with outside experts to ensure that the snap arms could handle the strain.
